I play a lot of soccer. A lot a lot. I get shorts with built-in briefs whenever I can, but those certainly aren’t a soccer shorts standard. Going commando isn’t a particularly appealing option (one of my women’s teams is permanently scarred after playing against one such lady in short shorts)… I mean, I slide tackle! I’ve never had a lot of luck with the slider-type pants (too much friction or fabric or something). Normal underwear are obviously out, though I’ve given normal thongs a try with moderate success. Since whatever I wear under my shorts ends up creeping northward anyway, at least with a thong it’s just a small strip of fabric rather than a whole seat’s worth. I’ve tried sport thongs in the past, and I’ve never cared for the thick, clingy fabrics.
I had high hopes for the Pure Lime Thong — the ventilation on the sides and adjectives like “soft” and “light” convinced me to give it a go. I’m sad to say that they just didn’t do the trick. First of all, they were TIGHT. I tried following the sizing chart, so my guess is these might run intentionally snug to try to keep them in place. They certainly stayed put, but were too tight to be comfortable. I noticed them THE WHOLE TIME I was on the field, which kind of defeats the point. Perhaps they’d work really well in other contexts, but they just weren’t comfy running around on the pitch.
That said, I also tried the Pure Lime Seamless Boxer Panties and LOVED them. They were comfy, they weren’t too bulky, they didn’t cause weird bunching, and I wasn’t constantly readjusting them during the game. They stayed put, and didn’t attempt a pilgrimage into Crack Land. Full disclosure: I got them one size bigger than the thongs since my experience with sports hipsters indicated that they often run small. They fit like a dream. So… would definitely recommend the company and the other product but wasn’t crazy about this one. Choose sizes with care.
