Who Sent The First Valentines Cards?

January 14th, 2012

There is some dispute about who sent the first valentines cards, but they were being sent far earlier than most people realise. Examples of written valentines have been found that date back to the 1400s. They were just not written on card, because it did not exist then. The earliest Valentine found is in The British Museum. Charles, Duke of Orléans wrote it to his wife when he was being held in the Tower of London.

It is thought to be the French that made Valentine’s Day what it is today. They popularised the idea of using poetry to express love.

The Evolution of Modern Valentines Cards

For the next few hundred years, people across Europe sent each other greetings of love in the form of poetry on St Valentine’s Day. Over time even people who could not write wanted to do the same and the valentines greeting industry was born.
Homemade valentines cards were made from the mid 1800s onwards. However, factories mass-produced valentines as well from the early 1800s, but these were still written on paper. By the 1870s professionally made cards were made and in the 1900s cards were being mass-produced in factories.
